Baited Jigs: The Key to Successful Squid Fishing

The secret to our squid fishing success lies in the effective use of baited jigs. We find that sizes ranging from 2.5gr to 3.5gr can be remarkably effective, depending on the tide strength of the day.

The baited jig imitates the movement and appearance of a prawn, a favorite snack of squid, making it an irresistible lure. The day of our big catch, the squid couldn’t resist our well-placed baited jig, proving yet again that this technique is incredibly productive when squid fishing.

The Intriguing Life Cycle of the Southern Calamari Squid

One of the most fascinating creatures in the marine ecosystem, the Southern Calamari Squid, carries a unique life cycle that captivates marine biologists and fishing enthusiasts alike. From the intriguing way they hatch to their quick maturation, let’s delve into the life stages of this intriguing cephalopod.

The life of a Southern Calamari Squid begins in a translucent egg, often found in clusters attached to seagrass or algae on the seafloor. Each egg, resembling a tiny capsule, houses a single embryo that grows over 2 to 4 weeks, depending on water temperature. During this time, the squid embryo feeds off the yolk in the egg.

Hatchling Stage: Enter the World

Upon hatching, the squid is perfectly formed but tiny—approximately the size of a grain of rice. These newborn squids, known as paralarvae, are already capable of catching small prey such as plankton. Even at this young age, they exhibit the same behaviors as adult squid, including the ability to change color and shoot ink.
