delves into the fun-filled world of Squid Fishing & Egi Jigging

Squid Jig, Squid Technique How to Catch

During a relaxing session on Port Phillip Bay, we share a few laughs and fishing tips, as well as capture an underwater camera’s view of squid hitting the Egi jigs.

For our squid setups, we used a Shimano Sennia 2500/Sonic Pro combo, alongside the Shimano Sephia rod. The jigs utilized were Ru Squid Jigs, Yamashita, and Shimano Sephia 04t, all paired with Japanese Egi rods.

How and where to catch squid?

Squids love spawning in broken reefs and weed beds. Channels leading into estuaries, breakwalls, and rocky points are also promising locations. Don’t forget to check under local jetties as well!

When it comes to squid fishing techniques, there are two main approaches. First, the cast and retrieve method using squid jigs and second, the use of a squid prong/spike baited with fish. Personally, squid jigs are my go-to choice for their efficiency.

Casting the squid jigs and letting them sink to the bottom is the way to go. Once there, give your rod an upward flick on the retrieve, making the lure imitate a dancing squid. This motion lures in nearby squids. Repeat this dance until you’re reeling in a catch.

If you opt for bait, attach the baitfish to the prong/spike and cast it just below a float. Once the float starts dipping underwater, it’s time to reel in your catch slowly but surely.

The choice of rod and reel depends on your location. If you’re fishing from land, a longer 9 ft range rod coupled with a 2000 to 3000 size reel works best. However, if you’re on a boat, a 7 ft rod offers better maneuverability.
